Melt Banana

I saw these cats in Portland, OR some years ago. As a huge Guided By Voices fan I must admit, they have some quick gem songs (’Greyhound Wires’ etc) but Bob has never written a tune this short.

A word about the name: ‘banana’ is derogatory Asian slang - as in yellow on the outside, white on the inside. This Japanese band may have some other meaning in their name as well, but they hold the flame of US 80’s DIY hardcore in their mix of Japanese noiserock.

Czech animation innovator

So I want everyone to know the name Jan Svankmajer. I was turned on to him around the time of my visit to the Czech Republic in ‘97 and have looked for and enjoyed his work sense. He has a unique and twisted sense of humor, hard to explain, but you get a glimpse in the following clip when the two cuts of meat start humping.

Here’s a link to a clip from another great film of his called ‘Conspirators of Pleasure’, though the actual clip doesn’t have any animation so I went with the other. He’s also done versions of ‘Faust’ and ‘Alice and Wonderland’. His most popular film in North America may be ‘Little Otik’ so I mention it as well in case it might ring a bell with you, reader.

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan

nusrat

As a nod to Pakistan’s independence day, I remind you of the great Qawwali singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. You’ve most likely heard him sing at some point but might not have been aware of his background or Sufi form of Islam. I love this tidbit as well:

Apparently, when Nusrat toured in foreign countries, he would watch television commercials in order to identify the melodies and chord progressions popular in that country. He would then try to choose similar sounding songs from his repertoire for his performances.

The Fantastic Planet

If you’ve never seen this animated Czech/French film from ‘73, I recommend it.

Bizarre workout video

So I guess the logic goes that you might have to know some of these phrases during your upcoming American vacation, but it sure is nutty to see in this format.

Knife Girl

I don’t know who she is, I don’t know how she does it. But I do know I wouldn’t mess with her-

Why clog your harddrive with filthy evidence?

So when you’re out there in the blogoverse, ingesting information, tackling code and searching for that missing semi-colon that will make it all right and ‘clicktasic’- you gain access to certain priveledged facts and links. Then you have to decide if ethics grant that you might share this info with your loyal readership, listeners - in the case of podcasts.
While I’ve chosen not to embed this sort of thing within my pristine posts (….for now), I have decided to go ahead and ’spread the word’. So reach for your astroglide, blow up dolls, dolphins, butterflys, dual-headed ebony kong, flashlight thingys - whatever tunes your harmonica, and light a scented candle folks, because here comes (cue drumroll) pornotube, though something tells me the lawyers aren’t far behind…
