Another great writer dies. I saw him speak on the UGA campus in the early 90’s. He seemed hilarious and possibly drunk.

    I was at that speech, too. (maybe we went together) When somebody asked him what advice he’d give a young writer who wanted to be successful, he said, “Give up. You cannot be successful.” It was like a scene out of one of his books, because the whole place went dead quiet, and everyone was like, Is he just messing with our heads, or what… that’s not what he’s supposed to say, or is it?

    I remember him commenting on the stealth bomber, which had just come out. “They spent a million dollars each on these damn things, and I can still see it.”
