James Nachtwey

Nachtwey

Wow, I just saw a really intense program on the documentary channel about James Nachtwey called War Photographer. You must see some of the images this guy has captured, understand the reason behind what he is doing.

I’m feeling really conflicted right now about the travel I’ve managed to do myself: some of it relatively ballsy perhaps, but all in the name of selfish kicks and “adventure”. I guess a more positive way to express this feeling is to say the man is an inspiration.

Awesome documentary. Nachtwey is a machine, in all ways. I found his detachment both fascinating and somewhat scary. Talk about single minded purpose.

Agreed, but I would specifically add ‘machine of empathy’ to your comment…

I have to comment on Nachtwey, being that this film had a profound influence on my view of photography as a means of education and declaration. How he is capable of detaching himself from those situations will forever boggle my mind, yet I love that he allows his images to speak for themselves - he never goes into lengthy explanations. I would argue that many of his photos illicit senses other than sight, you can hear the cries of people and the shots of gunfire. Amazing man, indeed.

On another note, I noticed you took some photos of graffiti and stencil work. I’m guessing you have an interest in it, so I highly recommend you check out this site: http://www.workhorsevisuals.com
Logan Hicks is by far the best stencil artist I’ve ever seen. He’s got true vision. Stop by Dakota Blue and let me know what you think of his work.

LH definitely is amazing, G, thanx!

I will swing by for a visit. Let me know when you’re ready to do your podcast interview…
